Cashmere from Lochcarron

Cashmere Probably the world's softest natural animal fibre - occurs as a direct result of the environment in which the Cashmere Goat lives. East of the Gobi Desert are the desolate steppes of Inner Mongolia and it is here where the finest cashmere comes from. It is the harsh climate coupled with meagre grazing which give rise to the finest underfleeces. The goats grow the underfleece beneath their thick exterior coat to cope with winters of 40o below. In the spring they moult and the nomadic herdsmen and their families comb out the precious underfleece over about a month. It is precious because they average less than a quarter of a kilo per animal - almost enough to make a scarf!
