A History of Smith Tartan

This is one of the most common of all surnames and is scattered throughout the length and breadth of Scotland. It is therefore difficult to assign a place of origin for this name. It is recorded that for 400 years a family of Smiths were resident at Strathblane. In the Gaelic-speaking Highlands the name is rendered as Gow. The Smith tartan was designed by Sir William Smith, founder of the Boys’ Brigade.
