A History of Maclachlan Tartan

This ancient clan possessed Strathlachlan, Argyllshire, in the 11th century. Gillespie MacLachlan was a member of King Robert the Bruce’s first parliament in St Andrews in 1308. During the 1745 Jacobite Rising, the chief led his clan to join Prince Charlie’s army. He was appointed A.D.C. to the Prince and was killed at the Battle of Culloden in April, 1746. His lands were forfeited, but were later restored to his heir. The MacLachlans derive their name from a 13th century chief called Lachlan Mor.
